Two truths and a lie. That’s the premise of The Last Time I Lied by Riley Sager. Learning more about a person by how they lie than when they tell you the truth. At least that’s the lesson that Emma Davis has learned the hard way. Fifteen years ago she attended Camp Nightingale; a prestiges all girls summer camp.

But when Vivian, Natalie, and Allison – her three roommates – disappeared one night without a trace, Camp Nightingale gets shut down. Everyone moves on and forgets about what happened at camp, everyone except for Emma. Now, a distinguished artist, she passes the time and pays the bills by painting the three girls who disappeared. Mostly because she can’t get their faces out of her mind.

When Emma learns that Camp Nightingale is reopening, she’s surprised to find an invitation awaiting her. Franny Harris-White, the owner of the land and the camp, has invited Emma back to be an art instructor for the summer.

Thinking it would provide “closure” – aka – a way for Emma to investigate what really happened all those years ago, she takes Franny up on her offer. But when she arrives, she’s placed in the exact same cabin as she was 15 years ago, under surveillance. And that’s not all.. when she starts finding clues that Vivian left behind, suspicious activity begins to follow Emma everywhere she turns.

Will she be able to solve the mystery that’s been haunting her for years? Or will she dig too far into a secret that someone wanted to make sure stayed buried forever?

My Thoughts

You know a book is good when my mom and I agree we both couldn’t put it down. That’s truly saying something.

Twists and turns will await you every turn of each page, and I can promise you – this is one ending you won’t see coming. I literally was like, “WHAT?!” (My sleuthing skills have failed me on two books in a row now, I’m not sure what to make of this – probably need to detox my mind and read a good romance or heartstring puller to cleanse the palate).

Ultimately I gave this one 4 stars, and it was truly a tossup between 4 and 5 stars. I typically reserve 5 stars for the utmost jaw dropping endings, or books that leave me so emotionally devastated I cry for days. But I decided 4 stars was a good middle ground for this story. It was good, I really liked it, but it wasn’t Sometimes I Lie or Gone Girl (I’ll always compare every thriller or mystery to those two. Sorry, not sorry).
